Well here it is mid-week already. We are in the last two weeks of school and every thing seems to be speeding up. This week I want to talk about an article I recently read by Bob Kauflin titled Can WE SING TOO MUCH ABOUT THE CROSS? If you get our local paper you will have seen this, but that is okay.
When I read the title I thought why would someone even ask that? How can we sing about something so important too much? I guess some people might think singing about the cross can be depressing. Or maybe they think that singing about Christ Jesus' death on the cross minimizes the resurrection. Of course you could not have the resurrection with out Christ Jesus' death on the cross, just saying.
But Mr. Kauflin it turns out does not believe that we sing too much or can sing to much about the cross. The problem is not in that we can sing too much about the cross, the problem is we can forget why we sing about the cross. In singing about the cross a person can fail to connect Christ Jesus' death to all it represents. You need to remember it is the Son of God who died upon that cross that you sing about. You need to remember that the cross is all about reconciliation. Christ Jesus died to reconcile all mankind to God. Col 1:19-22 ~19 For it was the Father's good pleasure for all the fullness to dwell in Him, 20 and through Him to reconcile all things to Himself, having made peace through the blood of His cross; through Him, I say, whether things on earth or things in heaven. 21 And although you were formerly alienated and hostile in mind, engaged in evil deeds, 22 yet He has now reconciled you in His fleshly body through death, in order to present you before Him holy and blameless and beyond reproach -- The cross takes into account who it was and what His death accomplished.
As we sing about the cross we can fail to apply it's results to our lives. It means no more condemnation against us can stand ~ Rom 8:37-39 ~ 37 But in all these things we overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us. 38 For I am convinced that neither death, nor life, nor angels, nor principalities, nor things present, nor things to come, nor powers, 39 nor height, nor depth, nor any other created thing, will be able to separate us from the love of God, which is in Christ Jesus our Lord. We are set free from the bondage of sin. Of course that is if you except Christ Jesus as your Lord and Saviour.
So as you sing about the cross don't fall into the temptation of over familiarity. That is the more you become more familiar with the cross the greater the temptation to become increasingly unmoved by it. May it never be so. Remember, "There is nothing more profound to consider than the Son of God giving His life as a ransom to redeem us." - Bob Kauflin.
