Good afternoon and welcome to the Panhandle. I hope you don't mind, but I'd like to take a little break from my study through the Book of Matthew. Well I guess it's not really a break because a lot of the post from this study will come from the Book of Matthew. This study is what prompted me to start blogging. But with more study helps and since I do these as a weekly devotion I think they are a bit better than that first set. So after saying all that what am I talking about? I am talking about the 49 General Commands of Christ Jesus found in the Gospels. The last three post I have done are from this series. So pull up your chair settle in and let's look at an introduction to the 49 General Commands of Christ Jesus.
What would you do if I told you I had a sure fire way for you to live a better life? You would probably think I was crazy or some kind of con artist and I don't blame you I would be skeptical to. So I am not going to tell you that, instead I am going to tell you that Christ Jesus has given us 49 General Commands that are words to live by. Christ Jesus said, “If ye love me, keep my commandments” (John 14:15). Keeping the commands of Christ Jesus begins with recognizing what they are. Over the next weeks we will be looking at the collection of 49 of Christ Jesus’ commands. Now before you switch me off or say to yourself, “Oh great just what I need more rules from you Christians to follow. Isn't the Ten Commandments enough?”
You know if you look at the 10 Commandments and these 49 general commands are just a bunch of “Thou Shall Not Do” or a bunch of rules and regulations you are missing the real point of them. They were not given to us to hamper our lives, they were given to us to show us how to live a better life. If you look closely at the 10 Commandments you will see what I'm talking about.
Murder, adultery, theft are treated as crimes in most societies, well since the first persons committed them. Think about this – if you don't commit murder you wont be in trouble with the law, if your not in trouble with the law – no jail time, no cell on death row, no untimely death. Sounds like a good thing to me. Don't commit adultery – one less thing to trouble your marriage, no angry husband or wife of the other person to deal with, no messy divorce, no sexually transmitted diseases, no untimely death. Sounds like a good thing to me. Don't commit theft – no one coming after you to get their property back, no physical confrontation, no jail time, no expensive court cost, no restitution to pay. Sounds like a good thing to me. Are you starting to see a pattern?
The same is true for the 49 General Commands of Christ Jesus. When you look at the list you see things like:
Repent (confess that sin you've committed)
Rejoice (Turn ever thing over to Christ Jesus)
Forgive others
You can see by just these three that following Christ Jesus isn't easy, but I can tell you from experience that it is worth it. So as we go through these 49, ask God to help you observe them, apply them, and faithfully follow them throughout your lifetime. And guess what your life will be perfect, not; but it will be better over all. And some day it will be pure heaven.
Thanks for dropping by, I pray you'll be back next week, until then I pray our Lord's blessings on you and yours,
Biblesurfer
